Building Community, Expanding Horizons: Inside SCRD Student Experiences
At the heart of every great graduate program is more than coursework. It’s the people, the connections, and the opportunities that shape your journey. Recent graduate student events hosted by the School of Community Resources and Development (SCRD) at ASU highlight exactly what makes this community so dynamic for both master’s and PhD students.
Real-World Insight: Learning from Industry Leaders
Master’s students had the opportunity to engage with Jenna Cooper, Chief of Staff at the Arizona Department of Health Services. With a career spanning organizations like the YMCA, Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, and Girl Scouts, Cooper brought a wealth of experience in public sector leadership and community advocacy.
Her message emphasized the importance of building partnerships, leading with purpose, and staying committed to community impact. For students preparing to enter the workforce, the session offered inspiration and practical guidance on navigating careers in public service.
Exploring Career Pathways in Parks and Recreation
Master’s students also connected with Milo Neild, Park Ranger Supervisor for the City of Phoenix. Through his insights, students gained a deeper understanding of careers in parks and recreation, an area where environmental stewardship and community engagement intersect.
Neild’s discussion highlighted diverse professional pathways, encouraging students to explore roles that contribute to sustainable communities and public well-being.
Advancing Global Perspectives and Research
PhD students gathered for a discussion centered on community service and interdisciplinary connections. A key highlight was a talk from Dr. William Hedberg, Director of the Asia Center at ASU.
Dr. Hedberg introduced students to research resources focused on Asia and shared insights from his work in early modern Japanese literature. His presentation invited students to think beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries and to incorporate global perspectives into their community development research.
Learning Together, Growing Together
Across these events, one theme stood out: the power of connection. Whether through meaningful conversations with guest speakers or collaborative exchanges among peers, students are continuously learning from one another.
SCRD fosters an environment where interdisciplinary thinking thrives, and where students are encouraged to explore new ideas, challenge assumptions, and support each other’s growth.
A Community That Supports You
Beyond academics, SCRD is committed to creating spaces where students feel connected and supported. These gatherings help build a strong sense of community—one where students can share experiences, develop professionally, and form lasting relationships.
Your Future Starts Here
From engaging with leaders in public health and parks management to expanding research horizons with global experts, SCRD students are immersed in experiences that prepare them to make meaningful contributions in their fields.
If you’re looking for a graduate program that combines academic rigor with real-world impact and a strong sense of community, SCRD offers a place to grow, connect, and lead.
