Alumni Spotlight: Jenny Driessen

Jenny Driessen

After a major medical life event in her mid-thirties, Jenny Driessen decided to make a change.

Following her battle with stage 3 breast cancer, Jenny reflected on the creative activities that helped her manage her illness and recovery.  She found purpose in becoming a yoga and fitness instructor and she knew instantly that she wanted to spend her life working with others to support healthy and active lives. So, Jenny started to explore the therapeutic benefits of art and yoga, the creative outlets that helped her with her own health.

Jenny’s ASU journey started when she learned about the Recreational Therapy Certificate through the School of Community Resources and Development.  After some research, she found that the skills built through the certificate closely matched what she was already doing, and the program's curriculum provided the added benefit of exposure to theory and leadership in recreational environments. Jenny applied for the program and started her formal studies immediately.

Not one to back down from a challenge, Jenny completed the coursework for the Recreational Therapy Certificate in one semester, calling it “very difficult, but doable."

Through the certificate program, Jenny built the skills and knowledge she needed to take the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification exam and has earned her Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist designation. She shared that the “CTRS designation has opened up doors to so many more job opportunities” and she can’t wait to get started on this next journey in her life.

Congratulations, Jenny, and wishing you all the best in your successful future!

The Recreational Therapy Certificate is offered in person and online.  Learn more here.
