Nine Mile Canyon Public Archaeology Project (2016- )

School of Community Resources and Development

Center for Sustainable Tourism

The Center for Sustainable Tourism is working with the BLM – Price Field Office in Utah to engage new communities in a public excavation of a Fremont pit structure located in Nine Mile Canyon just north of Wellington Utah. In Fall 2017 six weekends of community teams began the excavation and the findings so far suggest a pit structure housed some community activities.  This site will eventually be restored and interpreted for public enjoyment. This will add an attraction to an already spectacular area that houses rock art along many of the canyon’s walls.  The Center is collaborating with Montgomery Archaeology Association in Moab and the Prehistoric Museum in Price. This project is funded by BLM as a Cooperative Ecosystem Study Unit contract. The team includes faculty Vogt, Timothy, Nyaupane, and Jordan, and graduate student Lindblom.
